Marilyn Klein, a former Female Democratic District Leader for the 80th Assembly District, and mother to Senator Jeff Klein, passed away after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease on Saturday, November 7, at the Hebrew Home for the Aged at Riverdale. She was 77.
Born on April 21, 1938, to the late Charles and Luba Goldberg, she grew up in Soundview with her siblings Gilbert and Barbara.
Marilyn was a product of local public schools, including Monroe High School. She married Howard Klein and worked for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company until she had children.
A devoted mother, she volunteered for the Parent Teacher Association at Morris Park’s P.S. 108 where her children attended grade school. She also served as the president of the Sisterhood at the Pelham Parkway Jewish Center.
Marilyn instilled in her children and in her community the value of making a difference and of supporting those in need. She cared for her mother, Luba, who also passed from Alzheimer’s disease and became active in family support groups to help others deal with their emotions and struggles.
She loved movies, travel, the beach, and especially politics.
She served as the Female Democratic District Leader for the 80th Assembly District for eight years, winning several contested elections. She also led the North Bronx Democratic Club.
Marilyn, a vibrant and energetic force, enthusiastically campaigned for her son and was his number one volunteer. Election after election, she collected far more petition signatures than anyone else.
Active in the community and Democratic politics, she campaigned for then-Assemblyman Ruben Diaz Jr., Assemblyman Carl Heastie and Councilman James Vacca. She helped other elected officials and judges on the campaign trail.
Her kind spirit was so well known, those she helped and worked with often stopped her son in the supermarket to ask about her before anything else.
She is survived by her brother Gilbert Goldberg, her sister Barbara Schifman, her son Jeff, her daughter Lisa Schneider, her son-in-law Ira Schneider and her grandchildren Jake and Zachary Schneider.
She was predeceased by her husband Howard Klein..
