The ball doesn’t lie if you ask Lisa Fields.
The Truman senior point guard was already feeling good about a potential future at Nyack College and her certainty of it increased during her visit after five consecutive made three pointers on the school’s court.
Fields did do that at any of the other places she visited.
“I made five shots in a row,” she said. “I though that was it.”
Fields committed shortly after and signed her National Letter of Intent last week at Truman. She chose Division-II Nyack over Kean and C.W. Post. A bound grew between her and the coaches, players and fellow recruits.
“They made be feel like this is where I need to be,” Fields said. “It just felt like a mature Truman.”
It was she that grew during her four varsity seasons with the Mustangs. Fields went from a flashy freshman to the squad’s dependable leader with help from some tough love from coach John Burke. After the team got off to a slow start this season he fully entrusted the turnaround to her and she didn’t disappoint.
“She had to take on so much,” Burke said. “I put it all on her and said this is all you. We went from 2-12 to 14-14. That was all her and her leadership…She was thrown into the deep end. All credit to her. She stepped up.”
Fields averaged 13 points, 7.3 rebounds and 7.8 assists during the regular season. She believes her game will mesh well with Nyack’s personnel.
“It felt like a place were I fit in,” Fields said.
Spellman’s Morgan picks Adelphi:
Pilots’ wing Niajah Morgan can rest easy heading into the summer. The senior was without a destination for next year this spring before a trip to an open gym turned into a hoops scholarship at Adelphi.
“I feel really relieved I happy to have everything done with an I can just enjoy my summer and workout,” Morgan said. “It’s a lot less stressful.”
She felt a strong relationship with Panthers coach Heather Jacobs and school’s Garden City location gave her a chance to get away from home without going too far. Adelphi won the Northeast-10 title and reached the Division-II NCAA tournament this past season.
In Morgan, Adelphi gets a versatile player. She is a lockdown defender who has seen her offensive game blossom. Morgan scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half in a playoff win over St. Francis Prep and had 18 points in a victory over Notre Dame Academy in the regular season.
“I know they like to run and push the ball,” Morgan said. “They are a very aggressive team. I think I will fit well into that.”
