A historic tennis club here in our borough will soon be serving up its summer season.

Established in 1886 in upper Manhattan, New York Tennis Club is the oldest tennis club in the state.

As the city’s population grew, the club traveled between three locations until settling in its present location in Throggs Neck.

“This is the most perfect location for a tennis club, it feels like you’re in the country, but you’re only 20 minutes away from the city. It’s a little-known gem here in The Bronx,” said Karyn Tasens, NYTC secretary.

NYTC is located at 3081 Harding Avenue and has six outside tennis courts encompassed by lush parkland.

The borough’s best kept secret will be holding three events to celebrate its approaching summer season.

According to Tasens, NYTC will be conducting an indoor open house called ‘Round-Robin Open House’ from 1 until 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22 and Sunday, April, 26. The event will feature tennis, lunch, and a way people to learn more about the program.

Opening Day for the summer season will start at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 9 and will last all day. People are welcomed to play, but need not need to worry if they do not have a set game.

A tennis coordinator will be on-site for the entire summer season to arrange games for people who do not have one already set. They will arrange round-robin, tournaments, and other fun events offered at NYTC.

The summer program’s membership averages $850, but provisional members enjoy a 20% discount. This same rule applies for first-time Weekday Only members who attend from Monday through Friday.

Memberships offered include provisional, which does not require additional fees; associate memberships; student memberships; and corporate memberships.

Children can also join in the fun.

The club’s Junior Program is offered to juniors of all ages who desire to learn more about the sport in an exciting, progressive, and structured environment.

The programs offered are tailored to each student’s level and goal and advancing players can progress into the Performance Tennis Program. Classes are usually a hour or a hour plus Kids Club or Kids Only Club.

They are scheduled for three terms: May 10 through July 4, July 5 through August 29, and August 30 through October 9. They will be held Fridays from 5 until 6 p.m. and Saturdays 4 until 5 p.m.

Kids Club offers open round-robin and match programs on Friday evenings which are available to all players enrolled in the junior development program.

Lessons and clinics for children and adults will be conducted throughout the upcoming season.

Memorial Day and 4th of July events and parties are also scheduled for this season.

Parking is provided inside NYTC’s private grounds and the club can be reached via public transportation.

An avid tennis player herself, Tasens grew up in Manhattan and played at local clubs.

“This was a great find for me and I have made a lot of friends in my time here,” she expressed.
