More than 50 students at the Leadership Institute High School, 1701 Fulton Avenue, were treated to a lesson in environmental history and energy policy from a legendary figure in the global environmental movement on February 13. Dr. Patrick Moore, a co-founder of Greenpeace and chairman of Greenspirit Strategies spoke with students about the challenges facing our natural environment and how they can forge a new, sustainable future. Students participating in the special assembly were from the school’s chapter of the Council for Unity.
New York AREA executive director John Durso, Jr. was also on-hand for the event, along with Dr. Moore presented a $1,000 check to CFU from New York AREA in support of the school’s Adopt a Kid program.
CFU works in schools and communities to reduce violence, promote leadership, and peacefully resolve issues such as bias, bullying, and gang violence. The ‘Adopt a Kid’ sponsorship program provides students with training, mentorship, pays for transportation to career fairs, and college orientation. “Adopt a Kid” also provides support for after school programs that provide recreation, tutoring, tolerance and health for life opportunities.
The programs allow donors to sponsor an individual student for $60 or an entire school chapter of 30 students for $1800. DeSena said,
“We thank New York AREA for their support and recognition of this program that is so vital to our students in the Bronx."
