Police believe they have recovered the body of 2-year-old Montrell Williams, a Bronx boy who has been missing for more than a month.
The NYPD pulled the remains of a small child from the East River beneath the Whitestone Bridge around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11. While the body has not yet been officially identified, authorities say it matches the physical description of Montrell, who was last seen on May 9 at his home in the Bronx.
The grim discovery follows weeks of investigation into the child’s disappearance, during which detectives reportedly began to focus on the toddler’s father. According to police sources, the father had been acting suspicious and was later captured on surveillance video tossing a black bag into the Bronx River near the Bruckner Expressway on May 10.
The NYPD has taken the father into custody. As of Wednesday evening, no charges have been filed, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Montrell’s disappearance drew concern from neighbors and child welfare advocates after an initial alert was issued in early May. Authorities have not yet released details about the condition of the body or whether the remains were found with any identifying belongings.
