A Bronx man was sentenced to five years in state prison for the violent, unprovoked beating of a 75-year-old MTA employee inside a Bronx subway station in 2023, Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced.

Anthony Williams, 31, of Bronx Boulevard, pleaded guilty to second-degree assault on March 20, 2025. He was sentenced Thursday by Bronx Supreme Court Justice Ralph Fabrizio to five years in prison followed by five years of post-release supervision.

Williams also pleaded guilty to attempted assault in the second degree for a separate incident at Rikers Island, in which he punched a correction officer in the face. He was sentenced to an additional 1½ to 3 years in that case, to run concurrently.

“Without provocation, the defendant punched and kicked a 75-year-old MTA employee who was in uniform on his way to work,” District Attorney Clark said. “We will not stand for assaults on transit workers, the backbone of our subway system.”

According to the investigation, the attack occurred around 9:15 p.m. on Sept. 12, 2023, on the southbound platform of the Nereid Avenue subway station. The victim, Baboo Singh, a longtime station agent with the MTA, was in uniform and heading to begin his shift when Williams approached him and struck him in the right eye without warning.

Singh fell to the ground, where Williams continued to punch and kick him repeatedly in the head and body. Singh sustained a fractured nose and jawbone as a result of the assault.

The case is one of several in recent years highlighting growing concerns about violence against transit workers. According to the MTA, assaults on employees have increased across the system, prompting calls for stronger protections and increased police presence in stations.

Williams’ sentencing brings closure to a case that shocked transit officials.
