The NYC Parks Department has begun yet another project in the Bronx, breaking ground on a much-needed reconstruction of Fox Playground in Longwood.
On Thursday, November 19, Parks Department representatives, Councilwoman Maria del Carmen Arroyo, Assemblyman Marcus Crespo, a representative for Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and members of the New York Civic Participation Project (NYCPP) gathered to celebrate.
“The reconstructed playground will offer something for everyone,” Parks Department Commissioner Adrian Benepe said. “Most importantly, the recreational amenities will help keep the children of Longwood fit and active.”
Students from P.S. 62 attended the celebration and the St. Athanasius choir delivered a delightful musical performance.
“I think this park will be great,” P.S. 62 teacher Robert McNerney said. “I can definitely see this as a place where we will be able to take students as an incentive for good behavior.”
More than two years ago, members NYCPP noticed the horrific condition of Fox Playground and began to push for its reconstruction. They met with elected officials and CUNY students to come up with a plan.
“We want the city to treat our community with respect and it makes me very happy to see work beginning at Fox Playground,” NYCPP Bronx committee member Porfirio Batiz said.
The reconstruction of Fox Playground, at Fox and East 156th streets, will result in an expanded play area with swings and play equipment, new spray showers and water fountains, a handball court, a better basketball court, better landscaping, a restored retaining wall and a dog park. Arroyo and the Diaz Jr. helped to fund the $2.5 million dollar project.
“For me this project is so very special,” Arroyo said. “This was not my idea but your idea, This project was born out of the process of the community coming together. The design is a product of what you wanted and I am happy to be in a position to help.”
