On Monday, Nov. 21, Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, joined by city councilmembers Rafael Salamanca Jr. and Amanda Farías along with  state Assemblymember Kenny Burgos, sponsored an annual turkey giveaway at the Lafayette Estates in the Bronx. The event was also sponsored and joined by the United Service Workers Union (USWU), Royal Waste Services and Stagg Group.

The event was organized as the cost of Thanksgiving dinner reached a record high this year — with turkey increasing 20% compared to 2021. Between cold temperatures and 8% inflation, Gibson and fellow sponsors understand that there are members in the community who may be experiencing economic hardship and gave away more than 250 turkeys to ensure that as many families as possible are able to experience a joyful holiday dinner with their friends and family.

Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson partnered with fellow council leaders and members of the United Service Workers Union to hand out turkeys.

“We are so grateful to come together with the Bronx Borough President and her unwavering commitment to supporting New Yorkers in need,” said Connor Shaw, political director for the USWU. “This donation of turkeys will make Thanksgiving dinner a bright spot during a tough economic year for local families. Now, when the need is greatest, we are proud to work with leaders that put the needs of people first, especially for a Happier Thanksgiving!
