The next month will be a busy, yet exciting time for a local hip hop artist.

Hip hop recording artist Cameron Jay is preparing to release a new album, a music video and other additional content, all before the new year.

Born in the Bronx, Cameron Jay lived on East 177th Street until he was nine years old, before he moved to East 224th Street, where he has lived ever since. He attended St. Raymond’s High School for Boys.

For over seven years, Cameron Jay has been recording, performing and putting out his own content – he has been writing music since he was 12 years old.

“I was inspired to start making music because it was a way to express myself and my thoughts,” Cameron Jay said. “Where I’m from, if you weren’t a basketball player or a drug dealer, you were a rapper or a party promoter.”

In August, Cameron Jay released his new single, ‘Ya Tu Sabe’, an English/Spanish fusion song featuring Latino artist Ran Jay, who sings the chorus. The song was released on both the Soundcloud and Spofity online music platforms.

The single features catchy, witty phrases that instantly grab the listeners attention, with lyrics such as, “4, 3, 2, 1 – like the new year,” and “I just want to be the only song on your I-Pod.”

He is in the process of putting together the official ‘Ya Tu Sabe’ music video, which is expected to be released by the end of the month or the beginning of December.

Cameron Jay has opened shows for artists including Trina, Joel Ortiz, Sadat X of Brand Nubian, Craig G of the Juice Crew and Steele of hip hop duo Smif-N-Wessun.

He said that his biggest music influences include the late Notorious B.I.G., P. Diddy, Fabolous, Rick Ross, Kanye West and Ryan Leslie.

Cameron Jay’s mother passed away in September 2015, followed by the death of his father in April 2018. One of the tracks on the upcoming album, titled ‘Miss You’ featuring Philadelphia-based singer Tru Vocalz and Islima, is an official dedication to them. Another song, ‘Peter Rabbit, Jr.’, reflects his father’s nickname.

“The biggest challenge of being involved in the music industry is trying to stay consistent when you have everyday life problems that you have to deal with,” he said.

Cameron Jay’s album, ‘December Son’, is scheduled to be released, fittingly, on Friday, December 20 on his own independent record label Net Worth Enterprises. He is also currently planning the date and venue for the album release party.

Cameron Jay also has a show planned at the Blackthorn 51 bar, 80-12 51st Avenue in Queens, on Monday, November 25 and is scheduling other live performances in the next few months.

Despite his career as a recording artist, Cameron Jay said that he hopes to eventually expand beyond the music industry and explore other business opportunities.

“My goals are to establish myself as a major artist as well as bringing my company [Net Worth Enterprises] to the forefront and bring my vision and lifestyle to the world,” he said. “I also want to venture off into other industries such as clothing, liquor, cinema and help others reach their goals.”
