Selected For

Prestigious Academy

The United States Marine Corps announces that Janieces Valles of St. Raymond Academy for Girls, was selected for and attended the 2019 Semper Fidelis All-American Program Battles Won Academy from Thursday, July 11 to Monday July 15 in Washington D.C.

During the academy, students experience leadership lessons at the Marine Corps Officer Candidates School, team building events, community service and a history-themed scavenger hunt on the National Mall.

This year, one of the most engaging and rewarding opportunities was a community service event during which participants built and presented 20 brand-new bikes to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington.

Valles was selected not only for her athletic performance but for outstanding character, academic excellence, and community leadership that reflects the Marine Corps’ values of honor, courage, and commitment.

Valles and her mentor, Jessica Rivera joined other outstanding leaders in Washington for the event.

Just 100 top student leaders from around the country were selected for this honor.

111-Year-Old Passes Away

Charlotte Lockett, age 111, who was believed to have been the oldest living Bronxite, passed away on Sunday, June 2.

Lockett was honored by the Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. in 2015 when she was 107.

She was born October 12, 1907 in Edgefield, SC as Charlotte Tucker.

During her early years, Lockett was educated in the Catholic school system in Augusta, GA.

Lockett migrated with her mother and siblings to Harlem in Manhattan. Her father died when she was a young girl.

She married Hampton Lockett on March 6, 1936. The couple had three children. Hampton passed away in 1962.

Lockett found her work as a dietitian at St. Vincent’s Medical Center very rewarding.

Her retirement from St. Vincent’s afforded her the opportunity to spend time with her family.

As a result of her generous spirit and pleasant personality she was loved by many.

Her essence and beauty will forever be cherished in all the lives of her family.
