This year’s Fair @ The Square will commemorate an important milestone.
The tenth annual Fair @ The Square is set for Saturday, June 16 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., rain or shine, along East Tremont and Lane avenues between Westchester Avenue and Silver Street.
The free event presented by the Westchester Square Business Improvement District and Image Marketing promotes Westchester Square’s diverse and thriving community.
According to Lisa Sorin, WSBID executive director, 7,000 people are expected to attend the celebration featuring live musical performances, family fun, vendors, food, jewelry crafting, beauty products, coupons and raffles, donated books from the Huntington Free Library and Metro Optics vision screenings.
Last year’s ‘Passport to the Past’ returns to emphasize two planned 2018 historical trolley tours through Westchester Square.
T-shirts depicting the square’s history will be sold at the event with all proceeds going towards the trolley tours.
In January, Westchester Square was named one of the Historical District Council’s Six to Celebrate, an annual citywide list of historical preservation priorities for classic communities.
The square was the scene of the Battle of Westchester Creek during the American Revolution and is home to the historical Huntington Free Library, St. Peter’s Church, Owen Dolen Park and the site of the Ferris Mansion.
From its humble beginnings as a small block party on Benson Avenue, the Fair has since matured into a half mile of music, merchants, food, fun and great memories.
Since 2016, WSBID has received assistance from the NYC Department of Small Business Services through its Avenue NYC Grant.
The grant has helped the Fair’s expansion and has funded the commerical corridor’s historical branding.
The four block multicultural festival will feature 200 vendors and activities for the whole family.
The multicultural festival features an all-day concert series co-hosted by Artie Rodriguez of ‘The Diamante Show’ and Elvis impersonator Gene DiNapoli.
Additional activities include a trackless train going around Owen Dolen Park, inflatable attractions, face painting, arts and crafts, carnival games provided by Frank Bee Stores, a deejaying workshop and a puppet theater.
The extravaganza features live performances by headliner Tito Nieves, ReignJah Band, Angie Rose, Durieux, Kenny Supreme, Baile! Café-Modern Latin Fusion, Andrea de la Vogue, Renaissance High School for Musical Theater and Technology, Young Ambition Raices Latinas Team, E’dee and Elite Stars Dance Academy and guest deejays DJ Lexs and DJ Kool Bob Ski.
Approximately 80 percent of this year’s performers are from the community.
“We have so much talent here in our backyard that we don’t have to go for the bigger acts to make this year better,” explained Sorin.
