First responders found the body of a 61-year-old pastor in the waters of the Evers Marina on Thursday, July 13.
Police were called to the docks around 9:15 a.m. after boaters spotted the fully-clothed man floating near them.
The victim identified as Letting Christ Be Known Evangelical Church pastor Amaurys Mella was discovered floating face down in the marina’s waters.
According to a NYPD spokesman, Mella’s son-in-law removed the pastor from the water and brought him to a nearby dock to perform CPR.
Despite his son-in-law’s best efforts, it was too late as Mella was pronounced dead on arrival by first responders.
The man of God had a dumbbell tied around his neck.
Police said someone spotted Mella’s body earlier and called 911, but responding police officers could not find him in the dark.
A NYC Office of Chief Medical Examiner spokeswoman said Mella’s cause of death was ruled a suicide by drowning.
Responding police officers discovered a suicide note left inside the pastor’s car parked at his 1426 Outlook Avenue residence.
The marina is down the block from the pastor’s home and Letting Christ Be Known offices.
According to family and friends, Mella had been suffering from depression.
Mella had served as pastor for the store front house of worship at 2111 Starling Avenue for 24 years.
Senator Rev. Ruben Diaz, Sr. knew Mella well as both belong to the New York Organization of Christian Ministries.
“After receiving the news that my friend, my brother in faith and companion in the Ministries, Rev. Amaurys Mella was found dead, I wish to express my deepest sorrow to his relatives, friends and brothers and sisters of his congregation,” said Diaz, adding. “I will continue to pray for our Lord to bring peace, tranquility and strength to all members of his congregation. May my good friend rest in peace.”
