Rotary News

The Rotary Club of the Bronx meets every Tuesday at 12:15 p.m. at The Shrimp Box Restaurant, 65 City Island Avenue.

At its regular meeting on Tuesday, February 2, Lori Baker, principal of P.S. 160 in Co-op City, was the guest speaker.

The principal, who has been at the helm of the elementary school for about 11 years, spoke about how she was encouraged to become a principal by a mentor.

She said she learned that sometimes someone else can see something, like an ability in ourselves, that we cannot see for ourselves.

As P.S. 160’s leader, she is striving to bring the community and the school closer together, she said.

The school is looking for community members to speak to the students about their own life and work experiences.

As an example of this kind of experience, she explained how a Parent Teacher Association board member spoke to the children about reinventing herself as an entrepreneur after losing a job.

The principal said that she absolutely loves her job, and has passion for the work. She added that she has a very low tolerance for teachers who are not passionate about teaching.

In addition to that meeting, the Rotary also celebrated the 102-year anniversary of the amalgamation of Nigeria on Sunday, February 7.

The evening featured traditional food, African music and participants in beautiful regalia.
