The Bronx will always remember the lives lost and sacrifices made by all in the wake of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.
A yearly tradition since the attacks, remembrances of the borough’s 143 residents and first responders lost that day will take place throughout the Bronx.
Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. and the Supreme Court of Bronx County invite all to attend Thursday, September 10’s A Day of Remembrance.
The Bronx community will gather together at Lou Gehrig Plaza located at East 161st Street and the Grand Concourse to remember families, friends and neighbors who were killed in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Attendees are asked to arrive by noon and the event will begin at 12:45 p.m.
“This event serves as a day of remembrance to commemorate the lives and sacrifices of those Bronxites lost on September 11 during the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center,” said Borough President Diaz, Jr. “They were people who served us, who protected us. They were our friends, our family and our neighbors and through this annual event, we pay honor and respect to them.”

On Friday, September 11, Jacobi Medical Center will host its annual memorial service at the permanent memorial located on its Pelham Parkway campus listing the names of Bronxites who perished in the World Trade Center attacks.
This memorial service will take place at the memorial located next to Jacobi Medical Center’s Staff House/Building #2 at 8:30 a.m.
“Events such as this one are important because people would forget about what September 11, 2001 was all about if there weren’t events like this one being held,” said Sylvia Lask, JMC Community Advisory Board special events chairwoman. “We would like to invite all to come to this event to pay their respects to those Bronxites who died that day and we have to pass this lesson down to the next generation,” added Lask.

Patrick Devine, Bronx County American Legion leader and James McQuade, Schuyler Hill Funeral Home director said a sunset memorial is being planned for next Friday at 6 p.m. at a September 11 monument in Throggs Neck at East Tremont Avenue and the Cross Bronx Expressway Service Road, but is not yet confirmed.
The 49th Precinct’s 14th annual Lieutenant Thomas Clesse 5K Run Commemorating 9/11 is set for Saturday, September 12 at 10 a.m. from Eastchester Road to White Plains Road and back on Pelham Parkway with all proceeds to be donated to the Widows and Orphans of Fallen Police Officers Fund.

Senator Jeff Klein will host the 5th Annual First Responders Appreciation Barbecue at Orchard Beach on Saturday, September 19.
This annual event is set for 1 to 4 p.m. and will feature food, drinks, face painting, games and a live musical performance by FDR Drive.
Honorees being recognized for their service include 45th Precinct Lieutenant Paul Trapani, EMS Station 15 Lieutenant Jason Waszmer, EMS Station 27 EMTs Deborah Greco and Francisco Pinoduarte, EMS Division 2 EMT Edwin Mendez, retired 49th Precinct Detective Victor DiPierro and 43rd Precinct Officer Alejandro Ochoa along with Engine Company 81 and Ladder Company 46.
“We owe a great deal of gratitude to the men and women who risk their lives to protect ours and each year we celebrate our first responders with our veterans to show our thanks and respect,” said Senator Klein.
