On Tuesday, May 26, reigning Miss USA beauty queen Nia Sanchez visited Monroe College students in their school’s Mintz Auditorium to spread a message of self-defense, self-confidence, and self-empowerment. Originally from California, Sanchez won the 2014 Miss USA title as Miss Nevada and in addition to being an avid jazz and ballet fan, she is also an enthusiastic Taekwondo practitioner holding a fourth degree black belt in the martial art. Sponsored by the college’s School of Criminal Justice and the Office of Student Activities, Sanchez was able to relate to students on a very personal level about her first-hand understanding of the challenges many face when growing up in tough urban environments.
