The second largest school district in the Bronx with nearly 80 elementary, middle and high schools enters the 2013-14 school year holding a B average and two new schools.
Last school year, it had 39,811 students coming from Morris Park Pelham Parkway, Williamsbridge, Wakefield and Co-op City.
It’s worst performing school is the Aspire Preparatory Middle School with an F average while Icahn Charter School 4 is ranked the best, according to education records.
In Pelham Parkway/Morris Park, a new four-story building will house an elementary school dubbed the Young Voices Academy of the Bronx, ushering in its first kindergarten class. The building is named the Dom Castore Educational Campus after the Morris Park community’s longtime neighborhood activist.
The Bronx Alliance Middle School is poised to open at 3750 Baychester Ave., housing MS 142 Philip Sousa, placed on the phase-out school list by the DOE last year.
As in most phase-out schools, resources will dwindle for the grade 6-8 school, with Bronx Alliance Middle School receiving a wealth of resources.
But the DOE will slowly funnel MS 142 students, giving second priority to students living within District 11’s borders.
But just as one school opens another could see its school merge with two others by next year. The DOE will hold a series of hearings in October on the proposed merger of Pelham Gardens Middle School and one of the Icahn Charter high schools with JHS 144 Michelangelo.
Hearing dates have been set up for Oct. 2nd, 4th, 7th and 10th at 6pm inside JHS 144 at 2545 Gunther Ave.
