Turkey giveaway held by Senator Bailey

Senator Jamaal Bailey hosted a turkey giveaway outside his district office on Thursday, November 26 for the Thanksgiving holiday. Bailey, along with the assistance of CCA Metro Carpenter’s Union and other organizations, gave away more than 150 turkeys to the community. Senator Bailey’s office also provided families with free gloves, hats and scarves for the upcoming winter months. Read more…

C-Town, SBH assist WIC residents in shopping more effectively

Supermarket store C-Town, in collaboration with St. Barnabas Hospital, helped WIC residents shop smarter and more effectively at a recent outing at C-Town on Crescent Avenue. WIC is a federally subsidized special supplemental nutrition program for women, infants and children. SBH’s WIC program has 6,600 enrolled members in the south and central Bronx. C-Town also provided turkeys to those families who spent $100 or more at the outing. Read more…

Sixth annual food giveaway held by J&S Caring Food Pantry

On the eve of Thanksgiving, J&S Caring Food Pantry volunteers, along with the assistance of the 41st Precinct Auxiliary, Patrol Borough Bronx and Parkchester Department of Public Safety, cooked delicacies for families at the Morris Help Shelter. The sixth annual food giveaway, which was organized by J&S Caring Food Pantry founders Jennifer Garib and Savitri McCrea, included dishes such as fried rice, Mac n’ Cheese, roasted chicken and turkey, homemade bagel stuffing, sauteed mixed vegetables, baked sweet potato, pastries and Guyanese-style rice and beans. ‘The King Lear Project’ performance put on by Lincoln Hospital

On Tuesday, October 29, NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln hosted a theatrical presentation of Theater of War Productions’ ‘The King Lear Project’ in the Lincoln Hospital auditorium. Featured actors included David Zayas, Marjolaine Goldsmith, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Linda Powell, Chinaza Uche and Bryan Doerries. A discussion addressing Bronx communities’ challenges was held after the performance and involved more than 100 members of the community, from senior centers, caregivers and clinicians from Lincoln. 56-year old pedestrian struck by Isuzu box truck

At around 5 p.m. on Saturday, November 16, a 56-year old man was fatally struck by an Isuzu box truck. The victim was attempting to cross the street at Bronx River and Westchester avenues when the truck, which was making a right turn onto Bronx River Avenue, knocked the victim to the ground and struck him with the truck’s rear tires. Montefiore Health System held a ribbon-cutting event to celebrate the grand opening of I.S. 98’s school-based health center earlier this month. The facility’s opening marked the Montefiore School Health Program’s 31st school-based health center. Teams of primary care providers, mental health specialists, dentists and community health organizers provide comprehensive care for over 40,000 children in elementary, middle and high schools throughout the borough. Albanian American Heritage event held at Jacobi

NYC Health + Hospitals / Jacobi held an Albanian American Heritage event on Wednesday, November 20. The event featured Albanian cuisine including burek, an Albanian dish that is similar to pizza. Jacobi, one of the few hospitals in the country which has signage in English, Spanish and Albanian throughout its facility, founded an Illyria family practice for the Albanian community in 1999. Car crashes into Lee Xing Restaurant on Westchester Avenue

A car crashed into Chinese food store Lee Xing Restaurant, 3207 Westchester Avenue, just off of Wilkinson Avenue at about 5:30 p.m. on Friday November 22. The crash resulted in the storefront’s glass windows being shattered as well as car damage, after the car apparently backed into the restaurant by mistake. Rivera, also a five-time World Series champion and the 1999 World Series Most Valuable Player, was honored for his career accomplishments.
