With wax crayons and paper in hand, visit some of Wave Hill’s treasured trees and have a tactile experience making simple, but rich, bark rubbings. Using these inspired rubbings, work with burlap, cheesecloth, bits of leather, craft paper and yarn to create a collection of rich textures and bark-inspired designs.

Here’s an invitation to climb trees with permission! Kids don tree-climbing harnesses and hardhats and ascend into the canopy of the old sugar maple tree at Wave Hill to get a bird’s-eye view of the garden. Arborists from Almstead Tree, Shrub & Lawn Care are on hand to assist budding arborists as well as answer questions about the big, old trees at Wave Hill.

It’s the time of year when little nestlings appear. Learn how to sculpt little bluebirds and vibrant nests from paper pulp and colorful, shredded confetti. Add raffia, pine needles and sticks and build a nest to keep little birds cozy. Make one bird or make a brood. Led by papermaker Randy Brozen.

Learn about Pachamama, revered in South America, who teaches moderation in what we take from the Earth. Make an inspired painting on a card with pop-out elements. Place it in a translucent envelope for a gift mom can treasure.

Make your own individual, lightweight, cardboard bird that will flutter into the mural or hover on sticks on the ceiling. Led by visiting artist Virva Hinnemo. Feathers and Flora Weekend event.

Through investigation of feathers, feet and skulls, discover how birds’ adaptations help them thrive in their special niches at Wave Hill. Feathers and Flora Weekend event.

Many species of birds make their homes in the varied habitats in and around New York City. Meet birds of all shapes and sizes and learn about the unique adaptations that enable them to adapt and thrive in the Bronx and beyond. Live birds and their human escorts courtesy of Volunteers for Wildlife, a wildlife rehabilitation and education center. Feathers and Flora Weekend event.

With watercolor brush in hand, find a place to perch and view the vistas unique to Wave Hill. What do you see flying off into the wild blue yonder? Experiment with the scale of birds near and far, and with brushy, atmospheric strokes in our outdoor sky-painting project. Rain or shine!
