New Bronx Chamber of Commerce holds 6th annual gala at Marina del Rey

The New Bronx Chamber of Commerce, “the voice of Bronx business,” held its awards banquet at the Marina del Rey on Thursday, September 25. The Wildlife Conservation Society received the Tourism Award; Capital One, the Corporate Community Award; Krasdale, the Centennial Award; Mario’s Restaurant, the Business Longevity Award; Bank Note Building, the Corporate Community Award; Detective Steven McDonald, the Humanitarian Award; with special guest, the legendary Jose Feliciano present for the whole evening, made a special musical apparance that captivated the audience. Over 550 attended the event, which thanked all who contributed towards the effort. Read more…

Klein’s Broadway trip a smash hit

Senator Jeff Klein’s Senior Appreciation Days at the Westchester Broadway Theatre were a huge hit. On September 4 and 5 Klein hosted a three-course luncheon and private viewing of the Broadway smash hit The Producers for 1000 seniors as part of his 14th annual Senior Appreciation Days. In addition, Klein provided a welcoming hour and resource fair in advance of the show. Read more…

Yankee Stadium  Memory

I do have many wonderful memories of games at Yankee Stadium. My greatest memory is meeting George Steinbrenner at Aqueduct Racetrack and receiving a personal letter from him. I was selling ice cream at the racetrack when Mr. Steinbrenner came for his usual, he loved chocolate milk shakes. Mr. Steinbrenner, after that, was most generous and gave me tickets to a Cleveland/Yankee game. We sat in box seats, right where Mayor Giuliani sat. It was the game right after David Wells pitched a no-hitter and at this game I attended, another no-hitter was being pitched for the first six innings. What a game! Read more…

Nat’l Endowment honors St. Raymond’s

The National Endowment for the Humanities has announced that Saint Raymond Academy for Girls, located in Parkchester, is a 2008 Picturing America award recipient. The Picturing America program introduces citizens of every age to our nations’ history and culture by bringing great works of American art into classrooms and libraries. Read more…

Bronx DA hires 55 ass’t district attorneys

District Attorney Robert T. Johnson announced the hiring of 55 new Assistant District Attorneys. The new ADAs began a two-week training program Tuesday, September 2, under the supervision of Assistant District Attorney Cari E. Ferreiro, Director of Litigation Training. The intensive program combines courtroom observation with lectures in criminal court practice. The following is a list of the new Assistants and their law schools. Read more…

Preston students present 9-11 memorial

More than 600 students, faculty, and staff watched as Preston High School’s Student Council president, Lissette Martinez, hung the American flag at half staff, with the help of her fellow executive officers, during the 9-11 memorial. The memorial included prayers of peace and recognized those lost on 9-11, especially the fallen members of Preston’s students, faculty, and staff. Read more…

New Pelham Bay office building

A property owner in Pelham Bay plans to add five floors and 12,730 square feet of prime office and retail space over an existing one-story building at 3221-29 Westchester Avenue, at Colonial Avenue. Fadil B. Brija, Pelham Pkwy. resident, named to Tax Commission

Councilman James Vacca joined his colleagues on Wednesday, September 24, to vote in favor of appointing Pelham Parkway North resident Fadil B. Brija to the New York City Tax Commission. As one of seven commissioners, Brija will hear appeals from residential and commercial property owners who believe the city incorrectly assessed the value of their property, leading to higher tax bills.
