Learning how to cook with apples

Mrs. Marino’s (and Ms. R’s) first grade class at Villa Maria Academy added a little spice to their Apple Unit. They baked apple pies, apple sauce and candy apples to help them learn about some of the many things we can make with apples. A great learning experience was had by all. Read more…

Japanese Chrysanthemum art show at the garden

Kiku: The Art of the Japanese Chrysanthemum, the elaborate flower show and cultural exhibition, returns to The New York Botanical Garden from October 18 through November 16. Last year, tens of thousands of visitors discovered the exquisite beauty of kiku—meticulously cultivated chrysanthemums in a traditional Japanese art that had never been seen before on this scale outside Japan. New features to this year’s month-long show include a new kiku variety as one of four styles on display in the Courtyards of the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, and a new bamboo sculpture by artist Tetsunori Kawana. Bonsai will be on display in the Conservatory’s Seasonal Galleries until November 2 and in the Conservatory Courtyards until November 16. Read more…

Bronx Academy of Dance presents annual festival; Eddie Palmieri at Lehman Center

The Bronx Academy of Art & Dance presents its annual BlakTino Performance Series, a festival celebrating works by Black, Latino and Blatino artists. The festival runs from Fri., Oct. 10 (National Coming Out Weekend) and continues through Sat., Nov. 8, at BAAD!, 841 Barretto Street in Hunts Point. Tickets cost $15 to $20 and a festival pass costs $45. Several events are offered free! BAAD! offers discounts to BAADGE and Bronx Cultural Card holders. Students and seniors also receive discounts. Britney Spears Visits John Philip Sousa

Pop singer Britney Spears came up to John Philip Sousa Junior High on Baychester Avenue on Wednesday, October 1. She gave a check to the school’s music department through the Elizabeth Arden program. The school’s band played some music for Spears. Read more…
