In our borough the fallen first responders and civilians of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 will not be forgotten.
A group of events honoring the memory of 9/11 victims on the 15th anniversary of the horrific events of that day are being hosted in the borough on and around Sunday, September 11.
At Jacobi Medical Center, home to a permanent memorial listing the names of the borough’s victims, the Jacobi’s Community Advisory Board is unanimous in its commitment to an ongoing, annual event marking the tragedy, said Sylvia Lask, a Jacobi CAB member coordinating the event.
“There is not one person on the Jacobi CAB who disagrees about having this remembrance every year,” said Lask.
Lask said that some Jacobi staff members have family or friends who died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and that the best way to remember is the annual ceremony.
The Jacobi event takes place this year on Sunday, September 11 at 8:30 a.m. at the foot of the hospital’s 9/11 Memorial Garden, which is next to Building 2. The CAB is asking that attendees arrive by 8:15 a.m.
A remembrance hosted by Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and the Supreme Court of Bronx County will take place on Wednesday, September 14 between noon and 2 p.m.
Elected officials, judges and FDNY and NYPD personnel have in past years attended the event commemorating September 11, 2001.
“We cannot forget the terror attacks of September 11, 2001 that took the lives of thousands of individuals from around the world and right here in the Bronx,” said Diaz. “About 143 of those individuals who lost their lives during September 11th were people who either lived or worked right here in our neighborhoods.”
In Throggs Neck, an annual sunset remembrance event at a permanent memorial located next to Engine 72 at East Tremont Avenue and the Cross Bronx Expressway service road, will take place this year without any major changes, said Mike Rahilly, event coordinator.
The crowd will gather at 6 p.m., and it starts at 7 p.m., he said.
The event has been held on September 11th at the memorial since it was built, and prior to that same remembrance was held in Bicentennial Veterans Memorial Park, said Rahilly.
“It is a great event,” said Pat Devine, who attends it every year.
The 49th Precinct will remember the anniversary of 9/11 with its with its annual Lieutenant Clesse Memorial 5K Run/Walk, taking place this year on Saturday, September 10 at 10 a.m., starting at the police station.
Registration will take place between 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the precinct, with a $20 registration fee, said Joe Thompson, 49th Precinct Community Council president.
“It is community and police coming together and remembering the tragedies of 9/11 where we lost a lot of people—both police and civilians,” said Thompson, adding that all participants will be provided lunch and a T-shirt.

Honoring those who answered the call at the ‘Ground Zero’ disaster site is part of remembering 9/11, and Senator Jeff Klein and local veterans will be holding a Sixth Annual First Responders BBQ for this courageous group on Saturday, September 17.
“These courageous men and women dedicate their lives to protecting ours, and we should reflect on the extraordinary sacrifices they make to serve our neighborhoods,” said Klein.
