Friend and family want Allerton street corner named for late firefigher Luis Fragoso

Seek to rename Allerton street corner for late firefighter

A neighbor is working hard to make sure one Allerton resident’s memory is never forgotten.

Luis Fragoso, retired firefighter and cofounder of the FDNY Disaster Assistance Response Team, died in April at age 59 from a 9/11-related lung ailment. His long-time neighbor and friend, Irene Estrada, is hoping to get a corner of Allerton Avenue named in his honor.

Estrada said Fragoso was extremely dedicated to disaster relief through the FDNY DART, which he helped found in the late 1980s.

“It was hard for me to see him go,” she said. “He had a big heart for people in crisis.”

She said when Fragoso died, she approached his children with the idea of getting a street dedicated for him, and they appreciated the effort to keep their father’s memory alive.

Estrada said she’s in the process of compiling the official request for the street naming, which she will submit to Community Board 11 later in June. The application must pass through the community board and then the City Council.

Estrada said she plans to ask for the dedication to be on the corner of Allerton Avenue and White Plains Road, which is in Councilmember Ritchie Torres’s district. The whole process to get a street named for someone typically takes at least six months.

Fragoso’s daughter, Emily Fragoso, said she plans to help Estrada with the application, and that it means a lot to her family that their father’s memory could live on in the neighborhood through the street sign.

“We’ll be able to look forward to coming home and seeing that,” she said.

Emily Fragoso said her father worked as a firefighter for 18 years until he was forced to retire after 9/11 because of his lung condition, but he still participated in disaster relief efforts.

“He continued doing what he loved and helping others,” she said. “We just want to continue his legacy.”

Estrada organized an announcement of the street naming proposal for Friday, June 6, at the corner of Allerton and Wallace Avenue. Emily Fragoso said she and two of her three siblings will be attending, as well as FDNY DART members, other firefighters, friends and Allerton neighbors.

Fragoso said it’s been a hard time for her family, especially because Thursday, June 5 would have been their father’s 60th birthday. But she’s grateful to those who are showing up to support the proposal of the street naming.

“There are a lot of people coming out to support us.”
