A 19-year-old has been arrested in connection with the shooting in Bronx Lebanon Hospital on Wednesday, November 9.
Sedgwick Avenue resident Michael Wayman was picked up in Harlem on Thursday, November 10 and charged with eight felonies, inlcuding two counts of attempted murder, one count of assault and one count of criminal posession of a weapon.
Police said Wayman fired multiple shots inside the hospital shortly before 7 p.m., wounding two employees - a security guard and a nurse. Both were treated at Bronx Lebanon hospital for superficial wounds. One employee’s shoulder was grazed by a bullet, and another had a bullet glance off his leg.
A spokesperson from District Attorney Robert Johnson’s office said the investigation for the motive behind the shooting was still ongoing and would not comment on reports that the fight was believed to be gang related.
Lebanon Hospital spokesman Errol Schneer said the shooting was a result of an incident that spilled into the hospital from the street.
“It was an isolated situation, totally independent of hospital,” he said. “The hospital itself has an emergency room that treats over 130,000 vists annually and we’ve never had a situation like this ever before.”
Schneer also commended Lebanon’s security staff.
“Our staff performed excellently, they worked closely with the NYPD,” he said.
Wayman will be tried in Bronx Supreme Court.
