Sonora Southwest Grill introduces bold flavors

It’s time to add some spice to your life. A new restaurant has opened in Morris Park, heating things up with a bold southwest cuisine.

Owner Ralph Russo opened the doors to Sonora Southwest Grill, located 2107 Williamsbridge Road, on Monday, October 5.

“This is a Native American South Western cuisine with a Mexican infusion,” said Russo. “I love this food, it’s so flavorful, and when you get this food at a high quality it’s hard to find a more satisfying meal.”

Russo grew up around the restaurant industry, always helping and working in the Italian restaurants owned by his father.

Though having entered into the real estate business himself, when presented with the opportunity to obtain the lease of the former Venice Restaurant, Russo saw it as a way to get back to his roots.

“I started looking around for a location to open a restaurant in 2006,” said Russo. “This area has many of Italian restaurants, so this brings a legitimate choice to the area, there were no Southwestern places.”

Adding some variety into the community where he was raised, Russo completely revamped the old establishment and brought in renowned chef, Joseph A. Cacace.

“This is different than anything around here. All the dishes have bold sophisticated flavors that are not over seasoned,” said Cacace. “It’s all about the complexity and bold flavoring.”

Upon entering the restaurant, visitors are instantly transported to a more peaceful time and place through the desert night sky theme, which transforms the ceiling into a staring night, with accents of browns and blue to complete the interior’s ambience. All this is complimented by hand-painted Mexican tiles and prints.

Sonora has 27 tables and seats 94 people, with a full bar that seats an additional 12, and is able to accommodate parties of any size.

The establishment is open Monday through Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Though now only serving dinner, the establishment will open for lunch on Monday, October 19, from 11:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. On Thursday, October 22, Thursday and Friday happy hour specials will be introduced.

“When people come here I want them to get a feeling that they can experience nowhere else in the Bronx,” said Russo. “They get the phenomenal service and quality of an upscale Manhattan restaurant with reasonable prices.”
