This election season the most important choice you make may not be in the polling booth. Rather, it may be at the ice cream counter.
To coincide with the November presidential elections, sweet-treat purveyor Baskin-Robbins is polling Bronxites’ palates with its “Flavor Debate ‘08” promotion. Votes can be cast for one of two new and unique flavors specifically assigned to candidates John McCain and Barack Obama.
Sen. McCain will be represented by Straight Talk Crunch, a delectable treat featuring caramel ribbon, chocolate pieces, candy red states, and crunching mixed nuts swirled into white chocolate ice cream.
Sen. Obama will be immortalized in ice cream by a sumptuous combination of peanut-nougat whirled with chunks of chocolate-covered peanut brittle and a caramel ribbon auspiciously entitled, Whirl of Change.
Throughout its history Baskin-Robbins has designed flavors and promotional events to signify important happenings in American history, world history, and pop culture. Beginning in 1958 with its Baseball Nut flavor, commemorating the Dodgers exodus to L.A., Baskin Robbins has made sure its flavors have marked the times.
In 1964, the Beatle Nut flavor hit stores just as the boys from Liverpool were taking the states by storm. Lunar Cheesecake launched as Neil Armstrong took his first “small step for mankind” on the moon in 1969. To honor America’s Bicentennial in 1976, Valley Forge Fudge was introduced to remind citizens of Washington’s valiant stand. And finally, Gorba Chocolate appears to honor the fall of the Soviet Bloc and Eastern Europe’s embrace of Democracy and Free-Market Capitalism.
At the Baskin-Robbins on 699 Morris Park Avenue employees felt that the promotion would not only be fun, but could serve a more serious purpose.
The manager, Christina, said, “Besides it being fun for the customers, it might encourage people who wouldn’t otherwise vote, to vote. Or maybe it will get them to think more about the candidates”.
Bronxites, can cast their vote for either Sen. McCain’s flavor, or Sen. Obama’s flavor, at participating Baskin-Robbins or online at www.baskin
While your flavor choice may not decide the fate of a nation, it will almost certainly decide the fate of your waistline.
